Soldiers,
sailors and airmen of Australias Federation Guard
(AFG) participated in the Turkish International Service
at the Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial on the Gallipoli
Peninsular, and took post as the catafalque party at
the Commonwealth Memorial Service at Cape Helles.
Still imagery from the Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial
includes AFG members marching past the Governor-General
of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC and
Ms Bryce addressing Turkish and international dignitaries.
Still imagery from Cape Helles includes AFG members
at post as the catafalque party and Ms Bryce laying
a wreath for the fallen.
The Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial was officially
opened in 1960 to commemorate Turkish soldiers who fought
in the Gallipoli campaign.
The Cape Helles memorial was constructed in 1924 and
stands on the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsular. The memorial
bears 21,000 names of UK and Indian soldiers who died
throughout the peninsular and Australian soldiers who
died at Cape Helles.
The AFG was officially launched on 7 March 2000 at Parliament
House in Canberra for the INTERFET welcome home parade.
Ceremonial events have taken the AFG to England, Turkey,
Greece, South Korea, Singapore and France.
