The President
of Burleigh Heads RSL Sub-Branch, Chris Keating, who
is also the organiser of the Burleigh Heads ANZAC Day
Commemorative service & march, stated today at the
72nd Annual General Meeting of the Burleigh Heads RSL
Sub-Branch that nothing will change at this year's ANZAC
Day march in Burleigh. Veterans will still be able to
have children, grandchildren or great grandchildren
march with them. Family of deceased veterans will be
also be welcome to join the march with those veterans'
medal(s) worn appropriately on the right side of their
chest. This is no different to previous years.
Mr. Keating stated that the members of the Burleigh
Heads RSL Sub-Branch feel strongly that this participation
by the young and family members in the march is an important
aspect of the ANZAC Day service and a way for family
to pay their respects to the veterans for their contribution
to the freedom & lifestyle enjoyed today.
Mention has been made in the media of families dividing
veteran medals among multiple family members. Tthis
practice is not supported by Burleigh Heads RSL Sub-Branch
or the RSL at large aand is totally discouraged by the
Sub-Branch. President Chris Keating stated that this
sub-branch has always advised families to keep the medals
together and purchase a copy set for another member
of the family. Only last year, a veteran's widow who
had two sons and each wished to march on ANZAC Day,
one in Sydney and one in the Gold Coast, on advise from
this sub-branch did exactly this.
"ANZAC Day services at Burleigh Heads have always
been a community event. Children have been encouraged
to march with their school and/or Scout group."
Mr Keating stated.
