Plaque dedicated to Doctors and Dentists of Changi & the Burma Railroad

On 15th February 2010, a commemorative plaque in recognition of the service and dedication of doctors and dentists to the POWs held in captivity by the Japanese during World War II on the Burma Railroad and in the Changi and other POW camps was unveiled at the Cenotaph within Burleigh Heads Memorial Park. The plaque which had been supplied and paid for by an ex-POW, Mr Mick Kildy, who wanted the Ex-POW medical staff to be remembered by name, had been fixed in an appropriate position on the cenotaph for the unveiling and for future generations to view by the Burleigh Heads RSL Sub-Branch, Junior Vice President, Mr Les McKenzie with the assistance of the President, Mr Chris Keating.

The dedication service was led by the Burleigh Heads RSL Senior Vice President David Grant, who was the master of ceremonies. An introduction to the ceremony was offered by Ex-POW Norm Anderton (Read his speech by clicking here). Mr. Anderton then called upon Mick Kildey, a surviving member of 2/10 Field Ambulance, to introduce Dr. Peter Hendry, one of the doctors being honoured. The plaque was then unveiled and dedicated by Dr. Peter Hendry (Read his speech by clicking here). Padre Fr Pat Molony was in attendance to bless and dedicate the plaque at the Burleigh Heads Memorial Park Cenotaph on Monday the 15th February 2010 at 11am.

There were a number of surviving ex-POW's in attendance, a few widows of ex-POW's and a few members of the public. Christine Smith, State member for Burleigh, was also in attendance (Read her address to parliament on February 23, 2010 regarding this dedication). After the short service the group retired to the Burleigh Bowls Club for refreshments.
