| On
15th February 2010, a commemorative plaque in recognition
of the service and dedication of doctors and dentists
to the POWs held in captivity by the Japanese during World
War II on the Burma Railroad and in the Changi and other
POW camps was unveiled at the Cenotaph within Burleigh
Heads Memorial Park. The plaque which had been supplied
and paid for by an ex-POW, Mr Mick Kildy, who wanted the
Ex-POW medical staff to be remembered by name, had been
fixed in an appropriate position on the cenotaph for the
unveiling and for future generations to view by the Burleigh
Heads RSL Sub-Branch, Junior Vice President, Mr Les McKenzie
with the assistance of the President, Mr Chris Keating.

The dedication service was led by the Burleigh Heads
RSL Senior Vice President David Grant, who was the master
of ceremonies. An introduction to the ceremony was offered
by Ex-POW Norm Anderton (Read
his speech by clicking here).
Mr. Anderton then called upon Mick Kildey, a surviving
member of 2/10 Field Ambulance, to introduce Dr. Peter
Hendry, one of the doctors being honoured. The plaque
was then unveiled and dedicated by Dr. Peter Hendry
(Read
his speech by clicking here).
Padre Fr Pat Molony was in attendance to bless and dedicate
the plaque at the Burleigh Heads Memorial Park Cenotaph
on Monday the 15th February 2010 at 11am.
There were
a number of surviving ex-POW's in attendance, a few
widows of ex-POW's and a few members of the public.
Christine Smith, State member for Burleigh, was also
in attendance (Read
her address to parliament on February 23, 2010 regarding
this dedication). After the short service
the group retired to the Burleigh Bowls Club for refreshments.
