Air Forces
local heritage will return to public display at RAAF Base Wagga
from next year. Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support,
Dr Mike Kelly AM MP today announced Air Force will spend up
to $65,000 completing the refurbishment of the museum building
at the entrance to RAAF Wagga.
The plan to re-open the heritage display at RAAF Wagga
was developed through close consultation between Air Force and
the Wagga Wagga City Council, Dr Kelly said. The
local community has shown a great deal of support and enthusiasm
for displaying RAAFs history in Wagga Wagga. Air Force
will work closely with the community to agree on a timeframe
for the display to re-open and operating arrangements.
I anticipate that local volunteer staff will play a significant
role in supporting the heritage display, with the appropriate
training being provided locally, Dr Kelly said. Community
engagement will include a public forum in Wagga Wagga early
next year. The building refurbishment is anticipated to be completed
by the end of February 2009.
I requested a review of the heritage displays future
based on the level of community support for the museum, and
this was reinforced after having received a petition from the
Member for Riverina, Kay Hull MP. I thank Mrs Hull for her support
of the community on this issue, Dr Kelly said.
Air Force has a long and proud connection with Wagga Wagga going
back to World War II, when units such as 31 Squadron were formed
at the Base. Air Force remains committed to maintaining its
strong relationship with the Wagga Wagga community.
