 $30,000 to honour Australia's Veteran community
 

Projects across the country honouring Australia's wartime heritage will receive $341,368 in funding, the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Alan Griffin, announced today. Mr Griffin said the funding demonstrated the Rudd Government's commitment to helping communities honour Australia's wartime heritage.

"Today we have funded more than one hundred local projects and activities that recognise the contribution of the men and women who have served our nation in uniform," Mr Griffin said. "Local communities play an important role in encouraging Australians to participate in commemorative activities, including attending Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services at local war memorials.

"The funding announced today will support a range of projects across Australia including the enhancement and restoration of community war memorials, the preservation and display of wartime memorabilia, the publication of untold unit histories and schools initiatives for younger Australians. The experience of service has been part of the lives of many Australian families. This Government is committed to ensuring the legacy of those who have served, and continue to serve, is honoured and remembered for generations to come," Mr Griffin said.

ACT Recipients
 
* The 50th Anniversary Book Committee will receive a grant of $3000 to help publish a book titled "50 Years of Wombats" to coincide
with the anniversary of the RAAF Apprentice and JEAT intake at the RAAF School of Technical Training in Wagga Wagga.

* The Australian Forward Air Controller Group will receive a grant of $1450 to help hold a reunion to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the group's service in Vietnam; and a further grant of $1026 to help install a plaque at the Australian War Memorial dedicated to the
Australian Forward Air Controllers.

* The ACT branch of the Royal Australian Navy Communications Association will receive a grant of $1000 to help replace the
Association's ACT banner to include the new Communications and Information Systems badge.
Northern Territory Recipients
  * Darwin High School will receive a grant of $3000 to help restore submarine buoys used in Darwin Harbour during World War II for public
display on a headland overlooking the harbour.

* The Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) Association of the Northern Territory will receive a grant of $2750 to help hold a service at the
Darwin Cenotaph, followed by a reception at the Casuarina Sports Social Club to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Battles of Coral and
Balmoral, and the 60th anniversary of the formation of the RAR.
New South Wales Recipients
 
* Tea Gardens RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $3000 to install a 'Touch & Tell' interpretive facility in Anzac Park, Tea Tree
Gardens.

* The No.3 Control and Reporting Unit will receive a grant of $2250 to help hold a dinner to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the
formation of the Unit.

* The Balranald Shire Council will receive a grant of $1320 to restore a 25 pound artillery cannon located at Kyalite.

* The Clarence Town Anzac Committee will receive a grant of $1190 to help install a flagpole at the Clarence Town Boer War Memorial Gates
for commemorative services.

* The HMAS Shoalhaven Association will receive a grant of $1750 to help hold a reunion for crew members and dedicate a plaque at the
Australian War Memorial..

* The Brocklesby Focus Group will receive a grant of $3000 to help repair and restore an Avro Anson engine for display at Blacksmith Park,
Brocklesby, and to install a plaque describing its significance.

* Far East Strategic Reserve (Navy) Association of NSW/ACT will receive a grant of $4000 to help erect a new war memorial in Woy Woy. The memorial will list the names of ships of the Royal Australian Navy that the Reserve served on in Malaya.

* The Grafton Memorial Committee of Grafton Korean Veterans will receive a grant of $3000 to help hold a final reunion commemorating the
55th anniversary of the Korean War cease fire.

* The Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum will receive a grant of $1460 to help install lighting at the museum to illuminate wartime
memorabilia on display.

* Wilberforce School of Arts will receive a grant of $3097 to help install an honour board dedicated to Wilberforce servicemen and women
who served in World War II.

* Granville Historical Society will receive a grant of $3000 to help produce a DVD based on experiences of servicemen from the Granville
district to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I.

* The Kempsey-Macleay RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help restore the Frederickton War Memorial on Great North Road,
Frederickton.

* The Snowy River Shire Council will receive a grant of $1320 to help restore and preserve the council's historical Snowy River Route
March Roll of Honour.

* The 2/1 Australian Anti-Tank Regiment Association will receive a grant of $1132 to help install a plaque dedicated to the Regiment at the
Australian War Memorial.

* Gloucester District Historical Society will receive a grant of $3000 to help hold an exhibition of wartime memorabilia from the Boer
War to the Vietnam War.

* Palm Beach RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help relocate the Palm Beach RSL War Memorial to a more prominent location
that is closer to the club.

* The Central Darling Shire Council will receive a grant of $4000 to help upgrade the fence and surrounds of the Menindee War Memorial
Cenotaph.

* The Balgownie War Memorial Fund will receive a grant of $3000 to install a security system at the Balgownie War Memorial to help prevent
further vandalism attacks.

* The Bombala RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help restore the Bombala World War I Honour Board and erect a protective
covering over it.

* Warialda and District RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help replace the badly deteriorated Warialda War Memorial with
a new memorial to be located in Captain Cook Park.

* The 4 RAR (Commando) Museum Foundation will receive a grant of $616 to help install a plaque at the 4 RAR Commando Museum dedicated to members who were killed in war and peace operations.

* The Deniliquin RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help restore a Krupp Field Gun located at the club.

* The 7 RAR Association will receive a grant of $4000 to help install a memorial with two plaques in Alma Memorial Park, Uralla, dedicated to soldiers of C Company 7th Battalion RAR who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.

* Tenterfield RSL Sub-branch of New South Wales will receive a grant of $6000 to help create a new display area at the club and to
restore and preserve memorabilia and honour boards for exhibition.

* Barham and District RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help construct new memorial gates at the entrance to the Barham
Cenotaph.

* The Nowra-Greenwell Point RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help refurbish the Greenwell Point War Memorial in Anzac Park,
Nowra.

* Karuah RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $3000 to help upgrade the Karuah War Memorial.

* The National Service and Combined Forces Association will receive a grant of $1300 to install a commemorative plaque in Veterans
Park, Cessnock dedicated to all National Servicemen.

* Wingham RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $1880 to help upgrade honour rolls at the Wingham Memorial Town Hall dedicated to
veterans from the Manning Valley.

* Elsmore Soldiers War Memorial Trust will receive a grant of $900 to help restore the Elsmore Honour Board.

* Blacktown City Council will receive a grant of $3000 to help hold a festival to commemorate Blacktown City's involvement in
Australian military history.

* The RAAF Vietnam RTFV/35 Squadron Council will receive a grant of $3000 to help hold a medal presentation and afternoon tea at the
Australian War Memorial; and a further grant of $1204 to help install a commemorative plaque dedicated to the Squadron.

* Kurri Kurri RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help install a mural at Kurri Kurri Workers Club commemorating the service of
veterans from the district.

* The Bunyah Public Hall Committee will receive a grant of $1254 to help install a plaque at Bunyah Public Hall commemorating the service
of veterans from the district.

* Woy Woy Ettalong Hardy's Bay RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $3600 to help preserve two honour boards at the Peninsula Centre in
Woy Woy.

* The US Army Small Ships Association will receive a grant of $2000 to help install a plinth and two plaques at Dawes Point in Sydney,
dedicated to the US Army Small Ships.

* The Lismore RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $2458 to help restore the Nimbin War Memorial Cenotaph in Allsop Park.

* The Performance Space Ltd will receive a grant of $3000 to help hold a theatre production titled Back from Front which explores the
experiences of returned soldiers and the impact of their wartime service on them and their families.
Queensland Recipients
 
* Highfields RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $3200 to help erect a new war memorial at the Highfields Culture Centre.

* Bundaberg Special School will receive a grant of $4000 to help install a memorial in the grounds of the school for use by students on days of remembrance.

* The 3rd Battalion of The Royal Australian Regiment Corps will receive a grant of $968 to help install a plaque at the Australian War Memorial dedicated to the Battalion, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Battles of Coral and Balmoral.

* Coolum-Peregian RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $1500 to help construct memorial gardens at Coolum Primary School, Coolum
Christian College, St Andrews Anglican College, Peregian Community College and Coolum High School, for use by students on days of
remembrance.

* East Palmerston State School will receive a grant of $3966 to help erect a community war memorial at the school to be used by students and members of the community on days of remembrance.

* Bluecare Yarrabee Centre of Care will receive a grant of $1639 to help install a flagpole at the centre in Redland Bay for use by residents on days of remembrance.

* The Cairns branch of the of the Royal Australian Air Force Association, Queensland Division, will receive a grant of $978 to help install a plaque at the Rocky Creek Memorial Park dedicated to the 19th and 43rd Heavy Bombardment Groups, 8th Fighter Group of the United
States 5th Air Force and the Australian Airmen who served with them.

* The Carlyle Gardens Townsville RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $2098 to help install two display cabinets at Carlyle Gardens
Retirement Village in Townsville to exhibit wartime memorabilia.

* Nambour RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help upgrade the memorial wall in Quota Memorial Park, Nambour, to include
plaques dedicated to veterans from the district who served in Korea, Malaya, Borneo and peace operations.

* Greenbank RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $3000 to help restore and display wartime memorabilia at the club.

* Nerang RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $3000 to help hold a commemorative service and dinner at the club to commemorate the 40th
anniversary of the Battles of Coral and Balmoral.

* The 3 RAR Corporation will receive a grant of $1000 to help dedicate a plaque at Enoggera Barracks to members of 3 RAR who lost their lives during service in Korea.

* St Joseph's Nudgee College will receive a grant of $3000 to help install a display cabinet at the college to exhibit wartime memorabilia.

* Sherwood Returned Services Club will receive a grant of $4000 to help restore the Sherwood World War I honour board.

* Wooloowin State School will receive a grant of $2420 to upgrade the school's war memorial with the addition of a bronze slouch hat.

* Cooktown RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help install two plaques in Anzac Park, Cooktown, dedicated to veterans from
the district who served in World War I and II.

* The Australian Mining Corps Memorial Campaign will receive a grant of $4000 to erect a permanent display at the North Queensland
Military Museum in Townsville, dedicated to Australian tunnellers from World War I.

* Operation Solace 15 Year Reunion Committee 1 RAR will receive a grant of $3000 to hold a 15 year reunion commemorating the deployment of
1 RAR to Somalia in 1993.

* Toogoom Community Association will receive a grant of $4000 to improve wheelchair access and pathways to the Toogoom Community Hall
Memorial.

* Clayfield-Toombul RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $1000 to help install a memorial stone and flagpole at the Clayfield-Toombul All Wars Memorial dedicated to veterans from the district who lost their lives during service.

* The Inglewood Shire Council will receive a grant of $4000 to help improve the surrounds and access to the Inglewood War Memorial.

* The Royal Air Forces Association of Queensland will receive a grant of $1150 to help hold a lunch to commemorate the 90th anniversary
of the formation of the Royal Air Force.

* The Queensland 4 RAR Battalion Association, Charlie Coy 789 Platoon (Ratpack), will receive a grant of $1750 to help hold a dinner
to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the homecoming of Charlie Company 4 RAR, 7, 8 and 9 Platoons.

* River Heads Progress Association will receive a grant of $172 to help install a plaque in Progress Park, River Heads, dedicated to the
war service of all veterans.

* The 16th Minesweeping Squadron Reunion Social Club will receive a grant of $844 to help install a plaque at Elsie Laver Park in Mudgeeraba dedicated to the squadron.

* Redlands RSL Sub-branch of Queensland will receive a grant of $3000 to help install a flagpole at Redland Memorial Bay in Neville Stafford Park for use at commemorative services.

* St Joseph's Church will receive a grant of $2000 to help install two stained glass windows in the church at Nambour, commemorating
veterans who lost their lives while serving Australia in war.

* Coolangatta Tweed Heads Sub-branch of the Vietnam Veterans' Association of Australia will receive a grant of $4000 to help install a plaque and hold a luncheon at the Kirra Sports Club to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Battles of Coral and Balmoral.

* The Australian Intelligence Corps Association will receive a grant of $4000 to help construct a memorial garden at the Defence Intelligence Training Centre in Bundall to commemorate members who lost their lives during operations.

* Beenleigh and District RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $3000 to help install display cabinets in the Beenleigh RSL Memorial
Room to display wartime memorabilia.

* Darling Downs Sub-branch of the Naval Association of Australia will receive a grant of $1299 to help hold a memorial service and luncheon at the Queens Park Mothers Memorial in Toowoomba to commemorate the RAN's involvement in the Korea War and the 55th anniversary of the
end of the war.
South Australian Recipients
  * The Lobethal Tapestry Weavers group of Lobethal RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $3000 to help create a tapestry depicting the war history of the Onkaparinga Woollen Mill.

* The South Australian Division of the Far East Strategic Reserve (Navy) Association will receive a grant of $800 to help purchase a new
Association banner; a grant of $1750 to help install a plaque dedicated to the service of the association, in the Adelaide Naval Memorial
Gardens; and a further grant of $400 to help hold a dedication service and luncheon for the plaque unveiling.

* The South Australian branch of the RAR Association will receive a grant of $3000 to help hold a service and refreshments at the Torrens
Parade Ground in Adelaide to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Battles of Coral and Balmoral.

* Peterborough RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $2970 to help restore the Terowie War Memorial; and a further grant of $627 to help erect a flagpole at the club's new premises for use on days of commemoration.

* The Anglican Parish of Port Adelaide will receive a grant of $1667 to help repair roof supports of the World War I War Memorial in front of St Paul's Anglican Church.

* Payneham RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $1599 to help install a display cabinet at the club to exhibit war memory books held by the Sub-branch.

* Morphett Vale and District RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help install a Korean memorial plinth at the City of Onkaparinga Memorial Gardens.

* The Southern Mallee District Council will receive a grant of $3000 to help hold an exhibition at the Council's premises to recognise the contribution of women during the war.

* Kadina RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help restore the Kadina Memorial Arch and its immediate surrounds which is
dedicated to all veterans who served in times of war.

* The Mitcham branch of the South Australian division of the RAAF Association will receive a grant of $4000 to help construct and dedicate
a Civic War Memorial within the Soldiers Memorial Gardens in Mitcham.

* Resthaven Aged Care Facility will receive a grant of $1740 to help replace a flagpole at the facility for use on days of commemoration, as well as paving the area to enable safe access for residents.

* The District Council of Barunga West will receive a grant of $2400 to help restore the Alford War Memorial in Port Broughton Memorial Park.
Tasmanian Recipients
  * The Historical Arms and Military Society of Tasmania will receive a grant of $1671 to hold a memorial service and luncheon at Government House in Hobart for veterans of the Battle of El Alamein and 9th Division to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the battle.

* Dr Catherine Blackmore will receive a grant of $3000 to help publish a book titled "War, Medicine and the State" which is based on a
soldier's experience of the war on the Western Front and his interaction with repatriation and repatriation doctors.

* Scottsdale RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help install a life size wooden sculpture of Simpson and his donkey at the
entrance to Scottsdale Cenotaph Park.

* Beaconsfield RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $847 to help plant 22 silver birch trees and attach plaques at the base, commemorating 22 local servicemen who died in World War II.

* The Tasmania Branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia will receive a grant of $2250 to help hold a service and luncheon at the Launceston RSL Club on 21 May 2008 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Battles of Coral and Balmoral.

  * Barwon Health will receive a grant of $3000 to help upgrade a mural wall in the Garden of Reflection and Remembrance of Geelong Hospital to include Navy and Peacekeeper plaques.

* First Armoured Regiment Association will receive a grant of $1200 to help install a plaque at the Australian War Memorial commemorating the 1st Armoured Regiment Royal Australian Armoured Corps and the 40th anniversary of the Battles of Coral and Balmoral.

* Friends of the Skipton RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $1000 to help install a plaque at the Skipton War Memorial dedicated to soldier settlers from the district.

* Branxholme Progress Association will receive a grant of $2550 to help install a flagpole and erect a safety fence behind the Branxholme
War Memorial.

* Balmattum Recreation Reserve will receive a grant of $2516 to help install an honour board at Balmattum State School, listing the names of servicemen from the district who served in World War II and the Boer War.

* Flinders RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $1935 to help install a plaque at the Flinders War Memorial dedicated to veterans from the district who served in World War II.

* Arawata Community Hall Association will receive a grant of $1266 to help install an honour board at Arawata Community Hall dedicated to
veterans from the district who served in World War II.

* Aged Care Services One (Central Park) will receive a grant of $1375 to help install a flagpole in the grounds of the Central Park Extra Service Facility in Windsor for use by residents on days of commemoration.

* Aged Care Services Three (Balmoral Grove) will receive a grant of $1639 to help install a flagpole at Balmoral Grove Aged Care Facility in Grovedale for use by residents on days of commemoration.

* Aged Care Services Twelve (Albury & District) will receive a grant of $1639 to help install a flagpole in the grounds of the Albury and District Private Nursing Home for use by residents on days of commemoration.

* Toorak Services Club will receive a grant of $6000 to help restore and preserve a large amount of wartime memorabilia and to install display cabinets for the exhibition.

* Watsonia RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help erect a memorial and flagpole at the Cherry Street 'Avenue of Honour' in
Macleod dedicated to Australian servicemen and women who lost their lives in World War I.

* The Hepburn Shire Council will receive a grant of $3990 to help erect a memorial at Sutton Park in Newlyn dedicated to the settler soldiers from the district.

* Western Health Reg Geary House will receive a grant of $1529 to help install a flagpole in the grounds of the house to be used by residents on days of commemoration.

* Rainbow Primary School will receive a grant of $3000 to help research the service history of veterans from the Rainbow district and produce honour boards dedicated to them.

* Derrinallum and Lismore Community Association will receive a grant of $2960 to help install a plaque dedicated to soldier settlers from the Ettrick Estate in Derrinallum.

* The Malvern Elderly Citizens Welfare Association will receive a grant of $4000 to help create a memorial garden, flagpole and lighting in the grounds of the facility in Glen Iris for use by residents on days of commemoration.

* The Casterton and District Historical Society will receive a grant of $418 to help restore two honour boards located at the Dergholm Memorial Hall.

* The Avoca RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $4000 to help construct a protective shelter for a 25 pounder field gun, which is on display at the Avoca War Memorial.

* Yannathan Public Hall will receive a grant of $1792 to help restore the honour boards located at the hall.

* The Vincenpaul Hostel of the St Vincent de Paul Society will receive a grant of $945 to help install a flagpole in the hostel grounds for use by residents on days of commemoration.

* Briagolong RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $2305 to help clean and restore the Anzac Park Memorial at Briagolong.

* The Murrayville Liaison Committee will receive a grant of $3185 to help install six commemorative plaques dedicated to veterans from the
district who served in World War I.

* Fig Tree Developments will receive a grant of $1490 to help install a flagpole in the grounds of Village Life Dromana for use by residents on days of commemoration.

* Oakleigh Primary School will receive a grant of $4000 to help re-locate the Oakleigh World War I Memorial Gates from a busy main road to the entrance of the Oakleigh Primary School.

* Dawesville RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $2000 to help replace a previously vandalised flagpole at Dawesville War Memorial for use on days of commemoration.

* Lake King Progress Association will receive a grant of $1000 to help erect a commemorative plaque in Lake King Bicentenary Park dedicated to all servicemen and women from the district.

* Mr Ian Gill will receive a grant of $3000 to help him publish a unit history of the 16th Battalion in World War I.

* The Returned Ex-servicewomen's RSL Sub-branch will receive a grant of $1317 to help erect a plaque in Kings Park dedicated to all women who served in times of war, as well as to assist with the exhibition of wartime memorabilia.

* The 86 Transport Platoon Vietnam 2008 Reunion will receive a grant of $2750 to help hold a reunion to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the platoon's return to Australia from Vietnam.
