The weather had been inclement all week prior to Sunday the
11th November 2007. Remembrance day turned out to be no different
with intermittent rain and showers. As predicted a huge shower
started at about 1015 hrs and finished 1050 hrs just as the
Army Cadet catafalque party mounted the guard. For forty-five
minutes the rain ceased and the Burleigh Heads RSL 2007 Remembrance
Day service went ahead. The service turned out to be a huge
success.
The Burleigh Heads
War Memorial Park and Cenotaph was spruced and ready for the
service that the weather had tried very hard to spoil. But
throug luck or with intervention from above, the rain stopped
at 1050 hrs. The Army cadet unit, 133 ACU from Palm Beach/Currumbin
High School mounted the guard and made the service something
very special for the Veterans and the public. It was very
heartening to see members of the younger generation put so
much effort into this event.
Their 2IC Army
Cadet Officer Lt Mark Shelley led them; a huge thanks goes
to cadet officers and the cadets for their participation.
The cadets, provided a flag officer, their total contribution
was most appreciated and invaluable.
During today's
Remembrance Day service, special mention was made of the three
recent losses of Australian soldiers namely:
~ Private Ashley Baker, 19 (2RAR) Died 5th Nov East Timor
~ Sergeant Matthew
Locke, Special Air Service Regiment. Died 25th Oct 2007 Afghanistan
~ Trooper David
Pearce, 41 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment Reconstruction Task
Force Afghanistan Died 8th October 2007
The roll call of
the eleven Sub-branch members that had passed away since last
years Remembrance service was also read out in silent tribute!
Over 100 Veterans
attended with in excess of 400 public also present. Considering
the age of many veterans, this was a wonderful effort and
they are congratulated!!
