Plaques to acknowledge
the repatriation to Australia of the remains of Lance Corporal
Richard Parker and Private Peter Gillson will be unveiled at
the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial during Saturday's
Vietnam Veterans' Day commemorative ceremony in Canberra. The
six Australians 'Missing in Action' in Vietnam were commemorated
by plaques bearing their names on three stone seats surrounding
the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra.
On Vietnam Veterans Day 2007, the recovery of the remains of
Lance Corporal Parker and Private Gillson and their return to
Australia and burial will be marked by two plaques on the seat
that bears their names.
"Four decades after their deaths, the remains of Lance
Corporal Parker and Private Gillson were found in the jungle
of Dong Nai province in June this year. The unveiling of the
two plaques at the Anzac Parade Memorial brings their journey
home to completion," Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Bruce
Billson, said. Mr Billson said that he had invited members of
the two families to Canberra for the ceremony. "I thank
the National Capital Authority for the installation of the plaques
at the Memorial, in consultation with ex-service representatives
and the Memorial's architect Peter Tonkin of Tonkin Zulaikha
Harford."
The plaques record the date on which the remains of the two
soldiers were discovered, when they were returned to Australia
and their final resting places. The original plaques will remain
on the seat. "The Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial
is a powerful symbol of the service, and sacrifice of Australia's
Vietnam veterans and it is fitting that these soldiers' final
journey home is commemorated here," Mr Billson said.
