Navy Veteran honoured for service as Repatriation Commissioner

The exemplary service of Rear Admiral Simon Harrington (Ret’d) has been recognised, as he steps down from the position of Repatriation Commissioner. The Minister for Veteran’s Affairs, Bruce Billson, said after a three-year appointment as the Services member of the Repatriation Commission, RADM Harrington had served the Commission with distinction. “RADM Harrington brought a depth of operational and administrative experience that was invaluable during the challenging times the Commission faced during his tenure,” the Minister said.

“Essential to the implementation of the new Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Scheme and the establishment of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (MRCC), was the Rear Admiral’s in-depth knowledge and thorough understanding of the military.” The Repatriation Commission delivers compensation and health benefits, to meet Australia’s commitment to care for those who served our nation in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

RADM Harrington is also a founding member of the MRCC, which has delivered a modern, military specific compensation scheme for current and former members of the Australian Defence Force. “I would like to sincerely thank RADM Harrington for his visionary leadership, dedication and strong commitment to ensuring both Commissions are well positioned to manage the challenges of the future,” Mr Billson said. "I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Simon and his wife Kathy the very best for the next stage of their lives.”

Former career officer in the Australian Army, Brigadier William Rolfe will succeed RADM Harrington as Services member on both Commissions from 26 January, 2007. Mr Billson said he welcomed the extensive Army experience Brigadier Rolfe brings to the role and looked forward to the strong leadership he would provide the Repatriation and Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commissions over the next three years. “This will enable the delivery of the very best compensation and health support for veterans and their families,” he said.
