In extending
his seasons greetings to all those in the veteran community,
the Minister for Veterans' Affairs Bruce Billson has taken the
opportunity to remind veterans that support services are only
a phone call away if they need them during the holiday period.
"For some in the veteran community, the Christmas and New
Year period can be a time of stress and mixed emotions, when
they reflect on their past and remember those that are no longer
with us. It can also be a time when family tensions are high
and old conflicts can resurface. For others it can be a time
of loneliness and intense feelings of loss," Mr
Billson said.
"Christmas is also a time when most of us relax with a
few more drinks than usual and for some alcohol may be one way
of dealing with those stresses and mixed emotions. For most
of us however it may simply be a matter of a few tips or reminders
to ensure risk free drinking and full enjoyment of the festive
season. The Department of Veterans' Affairs has some excellent
resources and advice available for all veterans and their families
through its health promotion program The Right Mix - Your Health
and Alcohol. Veterans can log on to The Right Mix web site and
see the latest information to assist them with achieving a happy
and safe Christmas."
"For those who may need more help or support, Veterans
Line is only a phone call away and can be accessed by calling
1800 011 046. Veterans Line is the after hours service of the
Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service. This service provides
free and confidential support and referral for all veterans
and their families," Mr Billson said. "Veterans are
particularly good at looking out for their mates, so for those
that find this time of year difficult or are on their own, it
may be worth reminding them that help and support is easily
available.
"I extend my best wishes to all veterans, war widows and
widowers and their families for a safe and healthy holiday season
and hope that those dear to you are near to you," the Minister
said.
