WHEN: 9 15 August 2006
About 100 infantry, cavalry and support personnel will simulate
urban operations from 9-15 August out of Gallipoli Barracks Enoggera
as part of training for the tenth Security Detachment (SECDET
10) to deploy to Baghdad, Iraq. SECDET provides protection and
escort for Australian Government personnel working in the Australian
Embassy in Baghdad. The troops are from: |
| |
*
Brisbanes 2/14 Light Horse Regiment Queensland Mounted Infantry
(2/14 LHR QMI),
* Darwins 2nd Cavalry Regiment (2 Cav Regt),
* Sydneys 3rd Battalion The Royal Australian Regiment (3
RAR), and
* 1st Military Police Battalion personnel from around Australia. |
|
Urban operations
are a regular part of training for Brisbanes 7th Brigade
and have been conducted here by previous SECDETs deploying to
Baghdad. Urban training involves driver training and troop radio
communications practice in Australian Light Armoured Vehicles
(ASLAV).
This training will hone troop skills, procedures and leadership
for deployment on Operation Catalyst, the Australian Defence
Force's contribution to the rehabilitation and reconstruction
of Iraq. Operation Catalyst currently comprises around 1400
ADF personnel. Most activities will take place within Gallipoli
Barracks with some vehicle movements around Brisbane. The number
of vehicle movements will not significantly increase above normal
levels and will not impede traffic.
Commander 7 Bde, Brigadier Andrew Smith, ADC said Army appreciates
public support and training in public areas is always conducted
with support of relevant local government agencies. Urban
training is essential to preparations for our role in Baghdad
and public support benefits us greatly. Community awareness
and support is key to the success of activities such as this,
Brigadier Smith said.
