The
Minister for Veterans Affairs, Warren Snowdon,
today announced funding for 63 projects and initiatives
to benefit veterans young and old across Australia.
The
funding is part of the Australian Governments
Veteran & Community Grants program which provides
support to ex-service and community organisations.
I am
pleased to announce $442,333 will support 63 projects
in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania,
Western Australia and Victoria, Mr Snowdon said.
These
projects improve access to community care services and
help veterans, war widows, widowers and their families
to remain active and social and ultimately enrich their
lives.
Veteran and
Community Grants are available to ex-service and community
organisations, veteran representative groups and private
organisations that contribute to health and welfare
of the veteran community.
It
is important veterans have access to a range of programs
where they can learn skills to help them remain independent
and active, particularly for the elderly living by themselves,
he said. This
funding will help support a range of initiatives: from
travel costs for bus trips to reduce isolation, to re-establishing
and renovating ex-service headquarters to enhance the
social and healthy lifestyle activities of members.
It
is important to note that some grants will go to assist
Mens Sheds, which have proven to be important
spaces, delivering health and lifestyle benefits for
many veterans young and old, Mr Snowdon said.
Since
2008, more than 1,000 organisations have benefited from
more than $13 million in funding through Veteran &
Community Grants.
