The Minister for
Veterans' Affairs, Bruce Billson, today announced appointments
to the Council of the Australian War Memorial. "The Council
plays an invaluable role in ensuring the Australian War Memorial
is an institution that truly embodies the spirit of Australians
at war," Mr Billson said.
"The Chairman
of the Governing Council of the Australian War Memorial, Major
General Adrian Clunies-Ross AO MBE (Retd), has been re-appointed
a part-time member of the Council for a period of twelve months.
"Major General Clunies-Ross has offered leadership, wise
counsel and oversight during an important time in the development
of the Australian War Memorial and will be supported by a
number of outstanding Australians who have already contributed
significantly to Australia's proud military history,"
Mr Billson said.
"Author and journalist, Mr Les Carlyon, has been appointed
a part-time member of the Council for a period of three years.
"Former Chief of the Defence Force and Australian of
the Year, General Peter Cosgrove AC MC (Retd), has been appointed
a part-time member of the Council for a period of three years.
"National President of the RSL, Major General Bill Crews
AO (Retd), has
been appointed a part-time member of the Council for a period
of three years. "Well known military plaque sculptor,
Dr Ross Bastiaan AM RFD, has been re-appointed a part-time
member of the Council for a period of two years.
"The Australian Government, through the Australian War
Memorial, is committed to providing a world class testimony
to the courage and sacrifice of so many Australians during
times of great hardship and peril," Mr Billson said.
