"Victory in the Pacific, 60th Anniversary"
Sunday the 14th August 2005, commenced the Burleigh Heads RSL Sub-Branch VP day commemorations and celebrations. We sponsored a special Medallion Presentation ceremony for Margaret May MP, Federal Member for McPherson, who presented 25 WW2 Veterans and War Widows with their Commemorative 60th Anniversary WW2 Medallion. There were over eighty in attendance, family and friends to share in this special presentation. There were quite a few Sub-Branch Members who were presented, and they all enjoyed a cuppa, cake and a biscuit. There will be other such ceremonies organized by Margaret in future as there is something like 300,000 to be issued until May 2006.

Monday the 15th August 2005, VP day Commemoration Service was held at the Burleigh Heads War Memorial, Cenotaph at 11am, with a School Naval honour guard mounted at the cenotaph, was a sight to behold. The Cadets were from the Robina State High School Naval Cadet unit. There was a large representation from Sub-Branch Members and many other Veterans. A huge representation of children from the local schools we also in attendance and an estimate of about 1000 people in total, to remember the 40,000 Australians who paid the supreme sacrifice and didn't come home and to remember all those who have passed away in the last sixty years since that war. It is estimated that out of the one million Australian that served, only 170,000 remain today "lest we Forget"

The Australian Government, through its "Saluting Their Service" Commemorations program and Margaret May, MP, supported the Sub-Branch with a grant to provide a luncheon to Veterans and family who attended the VJ service. With kind co-operation of the Management and Staff of the Burleigh Heads Bowls Club, arrangement were made and a wonderful meal was provided to over 100 on the day, everyone enjoyed the occasion and should remember the day the Second World War ended sixty years ago with fondness.
